If you want one number to work from, use this one: most Jacksonville homes should have the dryer vent cleaned once a year. That single line covers a lot of households well. But a baseline is a starting point, not a rule, and there are common local situations where twelve months is simply too long to wait.
The reason the question matters is straightforward. The U.S. Fire Administration has found that failure to clean the dryer is the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires. Lint is combustible, it accumulates in a warm enclosed duct, and nothing about that process announces itself. A vent does not usually fail suddenly. It narrows gradually until the dryer stops working the way it used to, and most people adapt to the slow decline without noticing it.
After more than ten years and over 20,000 jobs across Jacksonville and St. Johns County, we have a fairly clear picture of what actually drives the interval in this area. It is less about the calendar than about four specific things: how much laundry moves through the machine, how long and complicated the duct run is, whether pets live in the house, and how the local climate treats the lint once it settles.
Every load sheds lint. The lint screen catches a good share of it, but a meaningful fraction travels past the screen and into the duct, where it settles along the walls and collects at bends. A two-person household running three or four loads a week accumulates lint slowly enough that an annual cleaning stays ahead of it comfortably.
A family of five running ten or twelve loads a week is a different situation entirely. That home is pushing roughly three times the lint volume through the same duct. In our experience, households at that laundry volume are better served on a six to nine month cycle. The duct has not changed, but what it is being asked to handle has.
Duct length and shape matter more than most homeowners expect. A dryer sitting against an exterior wall with a short straight run to a hood outside is close to the best case. Air moves fast, lint tends to be carried through, and what does settle is comparatively easy to reach.
Compare that with an interior laundry room where the duct travels twenty or thirty feet and turns several times before it terminates at the roof. Every elbow slows airflow and creates a spot where lint drops out of the airstream and stays. A vertical run to a roof cap adds another problem: lint that loses momentum on the way up falls back down and packs into the base of the run.
Roof terminations also collect debris from the outside. Leaves, pine needles, and nesting material get in at the cap, and that intrusion narrows the opening from the far end while lint builds from the near end. Homes with long or roof-terminating runs frequently warrant service more often than once a year, and they are worth having someone look at properly rather than guessing. A dryer vent inspection establishes what your run actually looks like, which is the information you need before you can set a sensible interval.
Pet hair is the factor homeowners underestimate most consistently. Hair comes into the machine on clothing, bedding, blankets, and towels, and it behaves differently from clothing lint once it reaches the duct. Fibers bind together into a mat rather than a loose fluff, and that mat grips the duct wall and captures more material passing by.
Households with a shedding dog or multiple cats commonly need service roughly twice as often as an otherwise identical home without pets. Homes with pets and heavy laundry volume together are the ones where we most often find a duct in worse condition than the owner expected.
This is the piece that generic national advice consistently misses, and it is the reason a Jacksonville home should not simply borrow a schedule written for a drier climate.
In dry air, lint accumulates as a loose fibrous layer. Airflow keeps pushing some of it along, and it stays relatively light. In the humid air we live with here for most of the year, the moisture your dryer exhausts does not dissipate as readily. The duct interior stays damp longer after each cycle, and lint settling onto a damp surface behaves differently than lint settling onto a dry one.
It clings instead of drifting. It compresses instead of staying fluffy. Over months of cycles, a damp-then-dry-then-damp pattern packs lint into a dense felted layer along the duct wall, particularly at elbows and at the hood, where airflow slows anyway. The practical consequence is that the same quantity of lint takes up a smaller volume and grips harder, so it restricts airflow more than the same amount would in a dry climate, and a quick blow-out will not move it.

We work the full length from the wall connection to the exterior hood with a rotary brush paired with a high-power vacuum, so the lint is pulled out of the house rather than pushed further along. The exterior hood and its flap get cleared as well, since that termination point is where roof and wall runs most often clog.
Afterward, we verify airflow rather than assume it. A duct that looks clear at the opening can still be restricted at a bend twenty feet in, and testing is what distinguishes a finished job from an assumed one. You get the photos either way. If the inspection turns up a damaged section, a crushed run, or a transition hose that has failed, that becomes a repair conversation rather than something quietly cleaned around.
Annual service is the right baseline for most Jacksonville homes. Large households, long or roof-terminating runs, and pets pull that interval shorter, and our humidity makes whatever lint is in there pack denser than it would elsewhere. Symptoms always take precedence over the calendar.
