Residential Dryer Vent Cleaning Repair

A vent that is merely dirty gets cleaned. A vent that is damaged has to be repaired, and the two problems feel identical from the laundry room — long dry times, a hot dryer, a faint scorched smell.

A vent that is merely dirty gets cleaned. A vent that is damaged has to be repaired, and the two problems feel identical from the laundry room — long dry times, a hot dryer, a faint scorched smell. The difference shows up in the ductwork itself, which is why we measure airflow and put a camera down the line before quoting any repair.

The four failures we find most often in Jacksonville homes

Northeast Florida housing stock creates a fairly predictable set of vent problems, and after years of inspecting homes here we see the same four over and over:

  • Crushed transition duct behind the dryer. The most common failure by a wide margin. Laundry closets in Jacksonville and St. Johns County townhomes are built tight, and pushing the dryer flush to the wall folds the flex duct into a kink. A 4" duct squashed to 1" loses most of its airflow while looking perfectly normal from the front.
  • Separated joints inside the wall or attic. Duct sections held together with nothing but friction eventually pull apart, and every load then vents hot, wet, lint-heavy air into the wall cavity or attic instead of outdoors. Telltale signs are humidity or a musty smell in a room that has no other reason to be damp.
  • Collapsed or corroded runs. Foil accordion duct sags into low spots that fill with packed lint. Our coastal humidity and salt air also pit thin metal from the inside out.
  • A termination hood that no longer opens. Louvers stiffen with lint paste, and birds and wasps nest behind a flap that has stopped closing. The duct can be spotless and the vent still be effectively sealed.

How we diagnose before we quote

We start at the wall, not at the dryer. Airflow gets measured at the termination so there is a number to work from, then a camera goes down the run to find exactly where the number is being lost. That matters because the fix for a kinked transition duct is fifteen minutes and the fix for a separated joint inside a wall is not — and you should not pay for the second when you need the first. You see the camera footage and the readings yourself; being prior home inspectors, explaining findings rather than just asserting them is the part of this job we actually care about.

What the repair involves

Most repairs fall into one of a few buckets: replacing a crushed transition with rigid or semi-rigid duct and a proper clamp, reconnecting and sealing separated joints with foil tape and screws at the collar, cutting out a corroded section and splicing in new rigid pipe, or swapping a failed termination hood for one that seals and latches. Where the existing routing is the root cause — too long, too many elbows, pitched uphill — we will tell you that a re-route solves permanently what a repair only buys time on.

Repair or replace?

Repair makes sense when the run is fundamentally sound and the damage is localized to one or two spots. Once we are patching a fourth separate break, or the duct material itself is failing along its whole length, you are better served by a full replacement than by chasing leaks. We will say so plainly, even though it is the smaller invoice we are talking you out of.

After the repair

We re-measure airflow after the work and hand you the before and after readings alongside photos of what we found and what we changed. Workmanship is covered by our 3-month warranty and money-back guarantee. If the numbers do not move, the job is not finished.

Common questions

Can you repair a vent that runs under a slab? Sometimes. Under-slab runs cannot be re-routed easily, so we camera them first and are honest about whether cleaning and repair will hold or whether an above-grade re-route is the better long-term answer.

My dryer is new but still slow. That usually points at the vent rather than the appliance, and new-dryer installs are a frequent source of crushed transition duct.

Do I need to be home? Yes, at least to give access to the dryer and the exterior termination. It also means we can walk you through the footage in person.

Why it matters

A clogged dryer vent is a fire waiting to happen.

Lint is highly flammable, and it builds up where you can't see it. We clean the full run, and test the airflow so you know the job is done right.
